n 1998 the British retail Consortium (BRC) , in order to meet the needs of the industry, developed and introduced a Food Technical Standard to be used to evaluate manufacturers, which produce products on behalf of retailers..

The Standard was designed as a tool to help retailers and owners of trade names in cases prosecuted by the authorities. According to European Law, the retailers and owners of trade names have legal responsibility for products sold under the name.
